Rashi Srivastava (21) is a BBA graduate (2019) who has come forward to share the experience of her finance internship for the benefit of all non-engineers.
Internship Field: Finance Project
Company: Managineers Educational Services
Duration: 1.5 months
How did you find out about the internship?
The information was shared by my coaching centre.
What were your responsibilities as a Finance intern?
As a finance intern, I was given to handle the project of a client, who was going to open a cafe outlet. The team comprised of 2 members. First, we conducted a SWOT analysis of the client's business model. Then, we made a 5 year financial projection which included the analysis of revenue and income sheet, break even projection and the operational break even projection. Finally, I submitted a PPT detailing the client's business model.
How much time did you contribute on a daily basis?
Approximately 3-4 hours per day.
What were the top 3 skills you acquired?
MS Excel - (not on an advanced level)
MS Power Point
How did your internship help you going forward in your career?
Frankly, it made me realize that finance is not my cup of tea.
If someone wants to apply for the same role, what would be your advice to them?
Internships can be a good way of judging which career is more suited for you before you make that choice in the form of a full-time job. You may not always like the role of your internship, but that's how you're gonna figure out what's not for you. For a finance internship, you don't need any higher level knowledge. Just basic knowledge of MS Excel and finance terms would be sufficient. (My internship was in a start-up, so you may need more knowledge if you are applying for a big finance company or for a more demanding finance role).
Anything else you'd like to say to the non-engineers who'll be reading your post?
You may realize after sometime that the field you were/are working in is not your cup of tea. But, don't leave too soon. Give some time to it and believe in yourself.
Thank you so much, Rashi for taking out time to share your insights with all the non-engineers. Your experience brought a very fresh perspective and might help someone who struggled with liking his/her internship role.
